WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Chemical Peel Before and After at Defy Nature LLC

Chemical peels have increased by 24.6% since 2015 according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Chemical peels are one of the most common non-invasive aesthetic procedures in the US. Technicians perform over a million chemical peels in a year. So, why are chemical peels becoming more and more popular?

A chemical peel is a mix of natural exfoliating acids like BHA and AHA. Many patients turn to chemical peels because of their ability to transform the skin. There are various layers of the skin, which is the largest organ in the body. The top layer of skin is the stratum corneum. Below the surface of our skin is the epidermis and the lowest level of skin is the dermis. Chemical peels lift away old layers of skin to reveal new skin with improved tone, texture, and color.

There are three types of chemical peels. Chemical peels differ based on the depth of the peel solution and how well the solution can penetrate the skin.

  • Superficial or light peels: This type of chemical peel is safe for people of all skin types. These peels do not penetrate the skin. Often, these are better known as topical or surface peels.
  • Medium depth peels: This type of chemical peel penetrates the skin to the epidermal level. These peels may even reach the papillary level of the dermis, depending on application technique. These peels can be very effective in treating skin aging, reducing pigmentation, and eliminating sun damage
  • Deep peels: A deeper chemical peel penetrates all the way to the dermis and is a much more invasive procedure. Deep peels “burn” the old skin away to expose new skin to the surface.

At Defy Nature in New London, our technicians are familiar with the VI Peel. The VI Peel contains a blend of powerful ingredients that work together at a lower concentration. This lower concentration offers an effective way to treat wrinkles, acne scars, sun damaged skin, fine lines, and more. The only difference? A shorter recovery period, meaning more fun in the sun for you.
