WHAT IS PREVENTATIVE BOTOX?

The thought of having skin that’s nearly as smooth, luminous, and wrinkle-free in 20 years as it is now is pretty appealing. At Defy Nature in New London, a little investment today will pay off in the long run. A preventive step like using sunscreen to help minimize the harmful effects of UV rays is just one recommendation from our experts.

But what about preventing wrinkles in the first place? And how soon is too soon to start?

Practically speaking, the idea makes sense: If you can limit the movements and harmful effects that eventually cause wrinkles, you might not get them in the first place.

Preventative Botox is a relatively new trend spearheaded by patients in their 20s and 30s. At Defy Nature we receive a steady stream of inquiries on the subject from Millennials and thirty-somethings asking if Botox and filler treatments are effective preventative anti-aging measures. They often ask, “Is this a good time to start?” Although it may seem counterintuitive, patients starting Botox in their 20s may actually require fewer treatments over time than if treatment was started later on in life. In fact, Botox works best as a preventative treatment. In late 2013, the Journal of the American Medical Association’s Dermatology sector published an opinion article by two Massachusetts-based skin care physicians claiming it was “rarely too early” to begin getting injections, fillers, and other noninvasive treatments. The article goes so far as to say that the injection of soft-tissue fillers earlier on could help stimulate collagen production, making results last even longer and possibly making the need for re-injections no longer necessary. This also means less cost to the patient down the road.
